From the people who bring you the internet’s saddest weekly update…

In celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Harper’s Index, Harper’s has generously (and much to the detriment of my productivity) opened their indexes up to free browsing and searching.

Here are some selected gems:

2/08 — Number of votes tallied in an online Greenpeace poll last fall to name a humpback whale in the South Pacific: 152,000

Percentage that favored the name “Mr. Splashy Pants”: 79

6/00 — Price an Illinois company charges for a pen embedded with Abraham Lincoln’s “genetic essence”: $1,650

10/94 — Number of “translators” commissioned last year by a Yale divinity student to convert the Bible into Klingon: 10

3/00 — Number of Parisians who break bones or are hospitalized each year after slipping on dog feces: 650

5/84 — Robot population of the United States: 8,000

Of Japan: 16,500

Thanks, Harper’s.
